How Social Should Online Publicity Be?

Online publicity is more than simply writing up a press release and sending it out to distribution websites. That’s a good beginning, but there are other avenues of publicity online that you should look into.

For starters, you can include in your press release for distribution some graphics, audio files, and video. I highly recommend multimedia press releases online. But you can go beyond that as well.

If you own a blog, and you should, upload your video to YouTube and embed it on your blog. Encourage other bloggers within your niche to do the same. You might send them a short e-mail letting them know that the video is available. I would not leave a comment on another blog with an embedded video in the comment, but you might leave a comment and link to the video on YouTube or your own blog.

Also, if you know of any popular forums in your niche that accept press releases then pay them a visit and send them a copy of your press release.

Social media sites like Facebook, MySpace, and BlogCatalog allow users to set up groups and build apps. These are great publicity tools. Build your groups and attract users of your apps. Then you can use those to market your products and conduct online publicity. This kind of publicity has a lot of potential for going viral if you hit upon something that just catches people’s attention.

Instead of writing up a press release and sending it to one or two distribution websites, try using social media to give your online publicity efforts a boost.
